Another Totally Free Product Brought To You By DIY D&D

This week's episode of "I Hit It With My Axe" is long and serious. (Relatively--it does feature spontaneous titfondling and casual PC mutilation, if you're into that sort of thing.)

I generally like the pointless funny episodes more since funny's funny, whereas any plot revelations in the game are stuff I knew about ages ago and often made up to begin with, so they have less impact on me.

This plot-heavy episode, however, is notable since I had some help from some cyberfriends:

-Jeff of the Gameblog
wrote most of the nobles of Vornheim (other than Vosculous Eeben). I figured: if I write some high-level fancies for this city, they may or may not ever get used, depending on what the PCs decide to do. Hell--there's no guaranteeing they'd even return to Vornheim.

However, it's nice to have some stuff there, and it's nice to throw fellow DIYers some cash from the show's budget (even if it means I temporarily become a YDIer) to develop a little depth on the setting in case I ended up needing it while I focused on more pressing things like sifting through 16 hours of tape looking for a 2 second clip of someone zooming in on a blue-wizard-with-pointy-hat miniature.

With Jeff's permission, I might put his full write-ups for the nobles up here--maybe fleshed out into full-on artifacty NPCs.

-The Death Frost Doom module to which Mandy refers to during the very blurry exposition was, of course, produced by consummate professional James Edward Raggi IV a.k.a. Lamentations Of The Flame Princess.

Fans of that grim and unforgiving auteur may be interested to note that sometime around October the 'Axe' crew will be returning to the site of Death Frost Doom* (which I am, rather lazily and metally, calling 'Deathfrost Mountain'). Wherein they will encounter some things that were not in the original module. One of which is very large.

In case you didn't feel like clicking the link or just like your videos small:

*At which point I will make sure the LOTFP logo appears in the credits, James. I figured this time we were just talking about it rather than "using" it.

I really liked this episode! I guess I'm notorious for liking "boring things" (really? People think 2001: A Space Odyssey is boring?) but the plot, & Mandy's interaction with it, was solid gold for me. Yeah, this episode was up my alley.

@mordicai

2001 is gorgeous genius and anyone who thinks it's boring is a mutilated assfuck and also incorrect.

"Axe" is just some thing that's fun.

I don't think it's boring. There's something almost a bit sad about it though, as if it was Mandy's last session, even though we know it's not. I'm not sure I can put my finger on why exactly, but it's something about the way she tells the backstory.

Quite possibly my favorite episode so far.

There is something about watching Mandy play (and no offense to any of the other ladies who are all fantastic) that just says, "this person is a gamer. This person cares about their character and the world they're in". I am constantly amazed by how she gets into it and how she approaches each obstacle. Its like watching Baryshnikov dance.

Add to that the amazing concept of the snakes and their book(s) and how all serpentine creatures fit in. Unbelievable. Psuedo-Dragons are cliff notes! Frickin' genius.

Another thing...wow...did the gals ever look great this episode. Mandy looks awesome with the purple hair. Very cool. I may have missed an episode...who is the attractive brunette next to Mandy (Not Frankie attractive mind you but very attractive - I mean I still gotta play favorites right?).

Anyway, I loved this episode. LOVED IT. Can't wait for next week.

Wish this semester didn't start so early..

Seeing people having fun playing D&D makes me want to try and scrounge my group together again.

All this DIY stuff is destroying the industry...or something.

I look forward to watching the episode.

Hey man this was the best episode yet. I enjoyed the in-character play and the longer scenes (not cutting to something else every ten seconds), and Mandy talking about her character's motivations. The random gibbering is fun but it's great when you see someone really taking it seriously.

And Frankie busting out with the D.V.D.A. was hilarious. It's always the quiet ones.

Thats a fabulous shirt you wearing Zak.
Seriously though, I love seeing longer episodes and this one was really good. I'd like to see more of the plot, if you're willing.

Yeah now that I think about it you have been. In the earlier episodes it got glazed over a bit I think*, but it's crept in. It's just the fact that most of the plot is given in the recaps with you or Mandy explaining it, rather than "as it happens" so I was still feeling like I was missing out on something. I dont know maybe its just me. Is there anyone involved in editing/production that isn't there for the game? Perhaps since you wrote it and were there for the playing, when it comes time to re-tell things get, I dunno, paraphrased?
Its not a bad thing necessarily. Like I said, once I thought about it, the plot is there. Its just for some reason I felt like it was a new thing that we got to see the actual story unfold.
(*like how we were thrust into the quest without seeing them talk to the Medusa with missing daughter, yadda yadda.)
